January 2026 has been nothing short of historic for Arctic Sea Tours. Once again, we are proud to share that every single tour in January had humpback whale sightings — 100% success, for the third year in a row.

Whether departing from Dalvík or Akureyri, our guests experienced something truly unforgettable.

848 Tours in a Row With Humpback Sightings

With every successful tour this January, we extended our streak to a remarkable 848 whale watching tours in a row with sightings of humpback whales. This consistency is extremely rare in global whale watching and firmly places Eyjafjörður, the fjord with Dalvík and Akureyri, among the most reliable whale watching areas in the world.

Rare Winter Behavior: Double Breach Sightings

This January wasn’t just about consistency — it was also about spectacle. Despite being deep winter in North Iceland, we witnessed multiple instances of double breaches — two humpback whales leaping from the water simultaneously, a behavior more common in summer months.

To witness this once in winter is rare. To see it multiple times is extraordinary.

The Star Ever Present: Little White

One whale stood out, as always — Little White.

First sighted on August 9th, 2020, Little White has become a well-known figure in Eyjafjörður. It was seen last year in January and february then again 15th July staying consistently visible ever since. as in previous years, often breaching, showing its fluke, and even approaching the boat to check out passengers.

We recognize Little White instantly:

  • White markings across the body
  • A distinct fluke pattern, which even once had a yellowish tint
  • A curious and active presence

Departures From Dalvík and Akureyri

This month’s tours ran from both our home port Dalvík and also Akureyri, giving our guests from around the world flexible access to this unique whale watching experience. Whether joining us from the Arctic coast of Dalvík or the capital of North Iceland, Akureyri, the whale activity was phenomenal.

Why Dalvík and Akureyri Are Leading Winter Whale Watching Destinations

  • Consistent sightings even in winter months
  • Close proximity to feeding grounds inside Eyjafjörður
  • Rich marine biodiversity and calm fjord conditions
  • Easy access from major towns and Ring Road
